What tax forms should I upload?

To complete your tax return, we'll need to see the tax forms you may have received throughout the year. The most secure way to get us these forms is to use the UPLOADS section of your Brass Taxes tax return profile. We do not recommend emailing tax forms, especially any forms that include your Social Security number. You should receive most of these forms by the end of January or early February, although it's not uncommon to receive brokerage statements as late as March.

Some of the common forms you might receive include:

  • W-2s

  • 1098E (student loan interest you paid throughout the year)

  • 1099-B (from stock sales or other investments)

  • 1099-DIV (from dividends; these may also come from your brokerage)

  • 1099-INT (interest you've earned; these may also come from a bank or brokerage)

  • 1095-A (you'll receive this statement if you had health insurance through the marketplace)

  • Mortgage interest statements

  • 1099-R (statements about money you've received or moved from your retirement account)

  • 1099-K (statements from online platforms, like AirBnb, Lyft, Uber, Venmo, Paypal, eBay, and Stripe)

  • 1098-T (from college tuition)

  • K-1 forms (statements you get when you're a partner in a business or have a certain kind of trust)

  • If you're a new client, we'll need a copy of your state and federal tax returns from the previous year. There may be important information in your prior return that we need to ensure carries forward to the current year. If you didn't file taxes last year, upload the most recent return you filed.

Why do you say you don't want my 1099-MISC or 1099-NEC forms?

Most people who receive freelance income will get 1099-MISC or 1099-NEC statements from your clients (usually if they pay you $600 or more in a given year). But people often don't receive these forms on time or at all, or they get paid in other ways, like cash, check, Venmo, CashApp, etc. We don't need to see your 1099-MISC or 1099-NEC forms, because we want you to do the math on your side for all the sources of your income. Then give us a total number on the SELF EMPLOYED tab.

In very rare instances, particularly if you have a 1099-MISC or 1099-NEC from California, the form might indicate that there are some state taxes being withheld. We do need to see the form if there's tax being withheld. Here's how to check for that:

  • For 1099-MISCs: If there is a number in Box 4 or 16, upload it.

  • For 1099-NECs: If there is a number in Box 4 or 5, upload it.

I don't have a scanner. What do I do?

Lay the forms down flat, take a picture with your smartphone or camera, and upload the photos. Please make sure the photos are not blurry and all the numbers are legible before you upload.

I've got a form that you didn't mention. What do I do with it?

When in doubt, upload!
