Documents for Children and Other Credits

Why are we asking for non tax related documents? For example, birth certificates, letters with the child listed and home address etc.

Updated 1 week ago

We know these may seem like odd requests, but we are asking for these documents as part of our regular process of evaluating what we need to get our clients eligible credits as easily as possible.

As part of our policy, we have determined that we will ask for, and retain, this information for each child tax credit, earned income credit, American Opportunity (education credit), and those filing as Head of Household.

With our due diligence requirements as tax preparers, we ask for these documents to get our clients all the credits available while keeping the appointment conversation focused on improving your results. As part of the tax return, both you, the client, and we, the preparer, sign an affidavit confirming that everything in the return is true. These documents are our way of confidently checking Yes on that box.
