There’s a lot to consider and do after the death of a loved one. It’s important to move slowly, gather resources, and get help.

One aspect of wrapping up the affairs of a decedent is to file their final tax return (yes, we must pay taxes even in death), and this is true even if someone died on January 1. Filing a final income tax return is a necessary step for settling the decedent’s estate and is typically done by a surviving spouse, parent, sibling, or court-appointed representative.

The same tax deadlines apply for final returns. For example, if the deceased person died in 2025, their final return is due by April 15, 2026, unless the surviving spouse or court-appointed representative has filed an extension.
