Can I file an extension myself?

You can file a federal extension yourself until midnight your local time on April 15. Anyone can file an online extension with one of the IRS’s Free File partners. Filing an extension gives you until October 15 to file your return, but it does not extend the deadline to pay your taxes. If you owe taxes, payment is still due on April 15. If you’d like to make a payment when you file your extension, you can use this calculator to estimate your tax bill.

Each state has its own rules about how to file an extension. This guide will help you file an extension in your state.

Was my return accepted?

If you received confirmation from us that your return was accepted, your federal and state returns were accepted. We send these confirmations out in batches via MailChimp, so check your spam folder if you didn't see it.

Where’s my refund?

You can check the status of your federal refund here.

You can check the status of your state refund by searching “Where’s my refund [your state].”

My IRS.gov account doesn’t show that my 2025 return was accepted. Is something wrong?

The IRS can be quite slow to update with your return results. If you received confirmation from us that your return was accepted, your return was accepted.

My IRS.gov account hasn’t updated with my 2025 results, and I can’t set up a payment plan. Help!

You can’t set up a payment plan until your IRS.gov account updates, but you can make a payment toward your 2025 balance at any time. Any payment you are able to make will help minimize interest and penalties on your outstanding balance.

I didn’t pay my federal and/or state balance with my tax return, but I’m ready to pay now. How do I pay?

You can pay your federal balance online here.

You can pay your state balance by searching “Where to pay tax balance [your state].”

I filed my extension, and now I’m ready to make my tax appointment. How do I do that?

Log in to the Brass Taxes profile you created and fill out a 2025 return profile. Once you’ve completed your 2025 information, you’ll get to our scheduler, where you can make a tax appointment.

I didn’t file an extension. Am I in trouble? Can I still file my taxes?

Yes, you can still file your taxes! If you did not file an extension or make a payment, and you owe taxes for 2025, you will likely see some interest and penalties added to your balances. Those numbers go up the longer you wait. We know taxes are stressful, but it can save you money in the long run to deal with them sooner rather than later.
